Glad to be back

So the Cruise was a bust! We HATED it...it was tacky, awful, and decidedly un-preppy. The Food was terrible, the people were bordering on unbearable, the decor was circa 1995 and the way they try to shamelessly nickle and dime you was insulting. I hated almost everything- NO! I do not want to buy a gold chain by the inch off a spool. NO, I do not want to watch a hairy chest competition. NO, I do not want to buy a soda card for $40. NO! I don't want to do the YMCA on the Lido deck! AND NO I DO NOT WANT MY HAIR BRAIDED!!!!!!!

It was terrible. The only part we liked was the 24 hours we spent in Old San Juan before the cruise started, and a couple of the excursions we went on- one where there weren't many people and we got to drive our own boat to a small deserted island was particularly cool.

Other than that it was not my cup of tea. I am sorry if there are people out there who love cruising- you only need assume that you went on a much nicer one than I did.

I am laughing because my parents used to take us on cruises when we were kids and I really didn't care for it then. We took a Mediterranean cruise on our honeymoon and after 12 days we were ready to come home. The Mediterranean cruise was not tacky, but I have been on some really nice/ expensive ones that were.

I've never been on a cruise. It does not look like my cup of tea also.

Sounds awful! My mom has been on a bunch of cruises and loved them all-minus one that was pretty much all old people. Hope your next vacation is better!

Unfortunately I've heard the same things you mentioned about many cruises. Too bad it wasn't great but at least you got to spend time together on your anniversary.

Ewwww. I could never be trapped on a boat with other people like that. I do hope you have additional vacation time. Live and learn!

Oh Midwest Prep... I am so sorry that your cruise was a bust, I have been on only one and it was amazing, I wish you had had that for your anniversary trip!!!

I LOVE Old San Juan, was there with my family when I was young, and have precious memeories of our visit, so I'm glad that part of the trip was special!!!

Oh, MP, I'm so sorry you had a rotten time. My MIL keeps wanting to take the whole family on a cruise and so far it keeps being inconvenient with little kids. I fear I will have to keep having children just to get out of going on a cruise. I know that I would hate it - it's just not how I like to vacation. I like being in 1 place and getting to know it and not really having a schedule.

Anyway, in about 10 years I'm sure you and your Mr. will be able to laugh about it.

Oh no! I have been on several cruises and loved them all. The best was one that I went on with one of my best girlfriends. The ship was like 2 mos old and they had an adult only pool. We were there every day! It was super nice- lots of restaurants to choose from and all incredible. Oh and they upgraded us to a big (well bigger anyway) room with a balcony. We had room service bring us breakfast there every morning. Soooo nice!! The key is to find one that is a new ship and has people in your age range. I went on one years ago that the age range was a bit older than what I was hoping for. But it was still very nice.

So so sorry you had a less than fab time!!

oh no! Sorry to hear that... I haven't been on a cruise yet and so far hasn't been too appealing to us either. Maybe more of a thing to do with kids?

It all depends upon which cruise line you go on for the comfort and the SALES pitch they throw at you each day. I have been on quite a few cruises. (I am unable to fly due to a medical condition and it is the only way I can get to Europe). Hubby and I went on an RCL cruise in OCt 2006 and it wasn't as good as the Clebrity Cruise we took on our honeymoon. I went on Crystal to Alaska and loved it. I took the Queen Mary 2 back from England in June 2005 and it was a nice trip. It depends upon the passengers and the destinations that make the cruise trip. Plus there are a few lines I will not go on.

So sorry it didn't turn out as you expected - but surely you can't be serious about the hairy chest / braids / gold chain roll?!

I've never been on a cruise for fear of exactly what you wrote. SO now I know all these I have been right.
We did go the British Virgin islands for our honeymoon and loved it. I'm sorry you didn't have a great trip...:(

So sorry to hear that you didn't have a good trip. Personally, I am
'anti-cruises'. I went on one as a kid. It was not really terrible or anything like that, but I would just never go on another one again. My idea of sun vacation is a nice resort on the beach. People say that you see more islands on a cruise, but I just don't like the idea of being stuck on a boat when I could be laying on the beach. Beside, I like to swimming in large pool surrounding palm trees. And you can't get that on a cruise!

Here to hoping your next vacation is better!

Oh no, so sorry. Your description didn't sound so great. I've only been on two cruises (River cruise in Europe and Mediterranean) and loved them both. I definitly think all cruises are not created equal, it totally depends on the line. I don't remember anything like you described (thank goodness).

Many of my friends love the smaller yachts like Sea Dream. Much more intimate and luxurious. A friend of my follows the culinary/wine circuit and was just was on a cruise where she took cooking classes from Le Cordon Bleu, now that is what I would like. I would like to go on the QE2 as well. Sorry about your bad experience. I don't know what line you went on but I've heard the worst ever is Carnival. No offense to anyone, just what I've been told...
